You should not purchase the first netbook that you locate even though it may have a small price tag. Shopping for netbooks is an art form and needs to be learned. In order to make a quality netbook part of your life, you should think about the following:
1. What are your wants and needs for your netbook?
In today’s market you can find two types of netbooks; one with a Solid State Drive (SSD) and one with a Hard Disk Drive (HDD). You will find that SSD netbooks boot up faster, can handle impact better, and have more reliable performance. However, they have small amount of space for storage (that is unless you want to buy one that is very expensive). If you consider a HDD netbook, you will find storage up to 160GB on the hard drive, but can not withstand as much impact as the SSD netbook. What does this mean to you? Well, that all depends on what you want and what you need. Can you use a netbook that is fast, but cannot store a lot of information? Or do you need one that boots a little slower, but can store more info?
2. Look at the brand of netbook
In today’s economy you can find many different brands of netbooks. The market for netbooks was first established in 2007 by ASUS. However, manufacturers like Acer, Lenovo, HP, Dell, MSI, and others have joined in popularity. You can count on different manufacturers to provide you with different features. For example, Asus is known for small keyboards. If you research which features each brand of netbook is known for, you will know which one will work best for you.
3. Do you want Windows XP or Linux?
Just as desktop computers compete between Mac and Windows, netbooks compete between Windos XP and Linux and its various versions. The difference is that each netbook contains both operating systems. This means that each netbook has a Windows XP operating system and a Linux version. Linux netbooks are very stable and secure leaving Linux users safe from most malware and infections. However, Windows XP netbooks are used more often because of their popularity. This is because many of the netbook users are used to Windows XP, and do not want to struggle with the switch to use Linux. In fact, because of this difficulty, Linux netbook users return their netbooks more often then Windows XP users.
4. Find and read user reviews.
You can determine the performance and functionality of the various brands of netbooks and the various operating systems by reading reviews. On the manufacturers’ websites you will only find the hyped up information about their product in an attempt to boost sales. If you want to know the true details on how any particular netbook works, you can check out our netbook reviews section or other online computer magazines such as netbookreviews.com which gives unbiased reviews and recommendation for the best netbook on the market. Different netbook models may also be discussed in various forums.
5. Do not forget to comparison shop.
When shopping, do not buy from the first website you find a netbook on. Be sure to to find pricing terms from at least three netbook dealers prior to deciding which one to use. You can often find netbooks cheaper on some websites because these websites are able to place larger wholesale orders. Other websites that provide cheaper products are selling second hand netbooks. No matter what website you decide on, be sure that they are reputable.
