Review Summary

Design
The external design, keyboard, and touchpad of the Asus Eee PC 1201PN is pretty much the same as its predecessor, the 1201N. Both the keyboard and touchpad are comfortable to use.

Performance
In terms of performance though, the Asus 1201PN is slower than its predecessor (according to PCMark Vantage), which is expected since it has a single core N450 Atom processor while the 1201N has a more powerful dual-core N330 processor. Laptop Magazine noticed some delays when starting video calls in Skype and when opening the AT&T Connection manager software they installed. The overall daily computing tasks run smoothly with no problem though, even with multiple application opened simultaneously.

Graphics
The next generation Nvidia ION graphic does provide slightly improved graphic performance. Both the video transcoding test and 3DMark 06 benchmark done by Laptop Magazine on the 1201PN gives a better result compared to the 1201N. Playing 1080p video from local hard drive goes smoothly, even on a 32-inch Samsung TV through the 1201PN’s HDMI port. Streaming video from Hulu in full-screen however will still stutter, according to CNet.

Battery Life
For the battery life, the Eee PC 1201PN last 4 hour 33 minutes on continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi test, and 3 hours 57 minutes on video playback battery drain test — both of which are 40 minutes longer than its predecessor.

Mark Spoonauer from LaptopMag says:

Overall, the 1201PN is a good value, but some may prefer the $599 ThinkPad X100e, which offers better ergonomics, more processing power, and slightly longer battery life (though higher temps and no HDMI). The Acer Aspire Timeline 1810TZ offers even better endurance, but weak graphics. Still, if you’re on a budget, this Eee PC is a good bet. Or wait until September, when Asus will offer a mobile dual-core version of this machine paired with Nvidia’s Optimus technology (which automatically switches between integrated and discrete graphics).

Scott Stein from CNet says:

Touting the Asus Eee PC 1201PN as the first next-gen Nvidia Ion Netbook is a bit misleading, since it offers single-core Atom performance, with no automatic graphics switching in an expensive package that underperforms its predecessor.

Ray Willington from Hot Hardware says:

We can certainly recommend this unit to new netbook buyers; it’s one of the best netbooks on the market. But it makes no sense whatsoever to consider an upgrade, even if you have a netbook that’s well over a year old. The performance of this machine, in the middle of 2010, is barely better than machines available in the middle of 2009. That’s just a fact of the slow moving netbook world, but it’s one worth paying attention to if you’ve been bitten by the upgrade bug and are considering scratching it. All that said, there’s no reason why Asus couldn’t turn an Optimus enabled version of this machine around in fairly short order. We’ll be waiting for that day to come, hopefully in the not so distant future.

Catharine Smith from Computer Shopper says:

At $499, the Asus Eee PC 1201pn is a pretty good deal. If watching video on your netbook ranks high on your must-do list, we definitely recommend the 1201pn over the HP Mini 311 or most other netbooks, for both its robust video acceleration and roomy LCD. Low-impact gaming will work better on this netbook than it would on netbook models without Ion 2, but don’t get your hopes too high. If you can’t stretch your wallet past $400, the Asus Eee PC 1001p or Gateway LT2120u will suit you fine, so long as video and other graphics-intensive tasks aren’t a priority. If you’re not sure, though, we say spend the extra $100. You’ll appreciate it.
