Pine Trail Netbooks

Pine Trail Netbooks

What Is Pine Trail?

Pine Trail is the code name for Intel’s next generation Atom platform. Pine Trail’s CPU, the single-core Atom N450 “Pineview” processor (confusing, I know), is a more highly integrated version of Atom that puts the memory controller and GPU on the same die as the CPU. As the diagram above shows, this move will shrink the number of chips in the Atom platform from three to just two.

Cindy Ng, Intel Netbook Marketing Team, demonstrates the Intel Atom Processor N450 for netbooks and the Intel Atom Processor D410 and D510 for entry-level desktops in the following video:

What To Expect From Pine Trail Netbooks?

The new processors will consume 20% less power and also feature a lower thermal design. What this means is that a Pine Trail netbook will get longer battery life compared to the previous generation netbook. Also, it will be easier for PC makers to design smaller, thinner, and occasionally fanless netbooks. According to Intel, there will be 80 over netbooks with the new processor showing up at CES 2010, which includes most major PC makers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, and Toshiba.

Understanding The Limitation Of Windows 7 Starter Edition

Understanding The Limitation Of Windows 7 Starter Edition

Since Windows 7 was released on 22nd October, most netbook manufacturers started to pre-install their netbooks with Windows 7 Starter edition instead of the Windows XP Home Premium. In terms of price, there isn’t much difference between these 2 OS.. so most people will naturally choose to go with the newer version. We have however seen quite a number of these customers, who choose to go with Windows 7 starter edition, being dissatisfied with the new OS due to the lack of some features on the starter edition. So when buying a netbook, it’s important to understand the limitation of Windows 7 starter, before deciding which version of OS to go with.

Below is a great video from com.puter.tv that explains the in and outs of the Windows 7 starter edition. In a nutshell, the limitation of the starter edition includes:

  • No Desktop Personalization
  • No DVD Playback (update: there’s solution for this limitation)
  • No Multi-Monitor Support
  • No Windows Aero features and effect (i.e. Glass (translucent borders) and Peek (thumbnail previews of open windows))
  • No Windows Media Center

Many of these limitations are in fact not needed by a netbook.. except for the desktop personalization feature (not able to change desktop background) which most customers are complaining on. Also, if you have spend $50 to get an external DVD drive, the Windows 7 Starter edition will not be the OS version you want to go with as there’s no DVD playback feature.

If you have already purchased a netbook with Windows 7 Starter edition only to find out later that this OS is not what you want because of the limitation, you can consider spending $75.99 to upgrade Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Home Premium. Or you can choose to go with other Linux operating system which are free.

Asus Eee PC 1005HA Guide

Asus Eee PC 1005HA Guide

Asus Eee PC 1005HA is certainly one of the best netbook in the market. While its specification is similar to most of other 10-inch netbooks in the market, here’s what really makes the Eee PC 1005HA stand out from the crowd:

  • Stylish design
  • Ergonomic keyboard and touchpad
  • Excellent battery life (Up to 10 hours!)
  • Reasonable price

For a 10-inch netbook that’s powerful enough for day-to-day tasks (e.g. general web surfing, checking email, word processing, etc.), the Eee PC 1005HA is definitely one of the best choice. But bear in mind that not all Eee PC 1005HA are created equal. Asus has made this netbook available in several variations. Knowing the differences between each variation will enable you to make a smarter choice and pick one that’s most suitable for you.

Variation Of Asus Eee PC 1005HA
Asus Eee PC 1005HA consists of 5 different models, each having slightly different specs. Generally, we can separate them into 2 generation: the pre-Windows 7 generation and Windows 7 generation.

Pre-Windows 7 Generation:

There are 3 models in this generation: Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X, Eee PC 1005HA-VU1X, and Eee PC 1005HA-EU1X. The differences between each models are shown in the table below:

1005HA-PU1X 1005HA-VU1X 1005HA-EU1X
CPU 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
Display Glossy Matte Matte
Battery Up to 10.5 hours Up to 8.5 hours Up to 4 hours
Price $359 $319 $290
Rating (out of 5) 4 (PU1X customer reviews) 4 (VU1X customer reviews) 4 (EU1X customer reviews)

Other than the differences listed above, other specification are the same for all 3 models: 1GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, bluetooth, and Windows XP operating system.

Those who need long battery hours, and seldom use their netbooks outdoor (thus no concern about the glossy screen), can go for the Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X, while those who often use their netbooks outdoor should go for the other 2 models with matte screen. The Eee PC 1005HA-EU1X is the cheapest among all, but is also the one with the shortest battery life.

Windows 7 Generation:

There are two models in Windows 7 generation: 1005HA-PU17, and 1005HA-MU17. Both are having 1GB DDR2 RAM, 250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, bluetooth, and Windows 7 Starter Edition operating system. The differences that distinguish these 2 models are shown below:

1005HA-PU17 1005HA-MU17
CPU 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
Display Glossy Matte
Battery Up to 10.5 hours Up to 8.5 hours
Price $383 $336
Rating (out of 5) 4 (PU17 customer reviews) 3 (MU17 customer reviews)

If you want to keep up with Microsoft’s latest operating system, these are the 2 models that you should go for. Again, there’s one with glossy screen and one with matte screen, each having different battery life. Choose the one that suites you the most. The performance difference between the Intel Atom N270 and N280 processor should be minimal.

And that covers all that you need to know about Asus Eee PC 1005HA. As of now, the Eee PC 1005HA is still the best selling netbook in the market, and is definitely a product that’s worth considering!

How To Choose The Best Netbook For Yourself

How To Choose The Best Netbook For Yourself

You should not purchase the first netbook that you locate even though it may have a small price tag. Shopping for netbooks is an art form and needs to be learned. In order to make a quality netbook part of your life, you should think about the following:

1. What are your wants and needs for your netbook?

In today’s market you can find two types of netbooks; one with a Solid State Drive (SSD) and one with a Hard Disk Drive (HDD). You will find that SSD netbooks boot up faster, can handle impact better, and have more reliable performance. However, they have small amount of space for storage (that is unless you want to buy one that is very expensive). If you consider a HDD netbook, you will find storage up to 160GB on the hard drive, but can not withstand as much impact as the SSD netbook. What does this mean to you? Well, that all depends on what you want and what you need. Can you use a netbook that is fast, but cannot store a lot of information? Or do you need one that boots a little slower, but can store more info?

2. Look at the brand of netbook

In today’s economy you can find many different brands of netbooks. The market for netbooks was first established in 2007 by ASUS. However, manufacturers like Acer, Lenovo, HP, Dell, MSI, and others have joined in popularity. You can count on different manufacturers to provide you with different features. For example, Asus is known for small keyboards. If you research which features each brand of netbook is known for, you will know which one will work best for you.

3. Do you want Windows XP or Linux?

Just as desktop computers compete between Mac and Windows, netbooks compete between Windos XP and Linux and its various versions. The difference is that each netbook contains both operating systems. This means that each netbook has a Windows XP operating system and a Linux version. Linux netbooks are very stable and secure leaving Linux users safe from most malware and infections. However, Windows XP netbooks are used more often because of their popularity. This is because many of the netbook users are used to Windows XP, and do not want to struggle with the switch to use Linux. In fact, because of this difficulty, Linux netbook users return their netbooks more often then Windows XP users.

4. Find and read user reviews.

You can determine the performance and functionality of the various brands of netbooks and the various operating systems by reading reviews. On the manufacturers’ websites you will only find the hyped up information about their product in an attempt to boost sales. If you want to know the true details on how any particular netbook works, you can check out our netbook reviews section or other online computer magazines such as netbookreviews.com which gives unbiased reviews and recommendation for the best netbook on the market. Different netbook models may also be discussed in various forums.

5. Do not forget to comparison shop.

When shopping, do not buy from the first website you find a netbook on. Be sure to to find pricing terms from at least three netbook dealers prior to deciding which one to use. You can often find netbooks cheaper on some websites because these websites are able to place larger wholesale orders. Other websites that provide cheaper products are selling second hand netbooks. No matter what website you decide on, be sure that they are reputable.

Do You Need A Netbook?

Do You Need A Netbook?

Netbooks look like miniature laptops but they are big business in the cutting edge world of Information Technology. They do not have the power or features of a regular laptop operating system.

The market was established when the first Netbook, the EeePC was introduced by Asus. It had a Linux operating system, and was thinner and more compact and less expensive than a laptop. But how good were they?

  • Next to a standard laptop, the Netbook is easier to cart around. It can fit in a small tote and weighs less than a laptop.
  • They are Internet capable.
  • The majority use Windows XP so most other Windows software will be compatible.

Not a bad start. However, is the average Netbook powerful enough to perform the functions that we expect from our laptops? Will the technology change with our needs?

Netbooks were made for:

  • Those who need fast, hassle free access to the Internet and basic functionality.
  • All models have standard WI-FI and many are now available with Bluetooth. Connectivity to the 3G network is accessible with a mobile phone.
  • The screens come 1024 x 600 high resolution from the factory. This can accommodate the graphics of most internet sites.

Problems

Several multi-media functions running simultaneously however, and the Netbook begins to show its limitations. The Flash players used by many web pages can be draining on the Central Processing Unit. One site can demand up to 40% of the Netbook’s power.

Other applications, like BBC’s Iplayer can slow a Netbook down considerably. This leaves very few resources for smooth usage in Windows XP.

That doesn’t sound good. So why would I buy a Netbook?

Netbooks are marvelous for busy people who work while commuting. If your needs to not include a lot of multi-media, they work well. They are fine for word processing and emails. They will also play music but have serious power issues when it comes to video.

OpenOffice is standard on most Netbooks and works well for general correspondence, databases, letter writing and basic spreadsheets.

Thankfully, there have been big improvements for keyboard like the MSI Wind model and the Asus EeePC.

The batteries can last up to 7 hours on a single charge which exceeds that of a standard laptop.

For non graphic-intensive projects and routine, daily operations a Netbook should have enough processing strength to keep most computer users happy.

Linux or Windows XP? In the early days of the Asus Netbook, price was the ultimate consideration. A Linux operating system was installed in the EeePC. People liked the affordability of the units and they sold.

Eventually the operating system was changed to Windows XP. Netbook technology improved over time, but the price was still affordable. Since most users are familiar with Windows, XP was installed. Now XP is the default for Netbooks. Units with Linux are available for those who prefer that system. If can even be installed by the user.

Linux takes up less space on the drive but is considered by some to be more complicated to use. Be certain to get a good virus protection program to install with XP. Notebooks are still vulnerable to online viruses and spyware.

So should I get a netbook?
