In the following video, NetbookChoice demonstrate the 1080p video playback on Samsung N510 netbook (which runs on Nvidia Ion platform) using 2 different software. On VLC Media Player, the 1080p video is pretty much a slide show and the CPU usage run high at 60 to 70 percent. On Power DVD 8 which comes together with the Samsung N510 netbook, the video run smoothly without any problem. So when you are to watch HD video on a HD capable netbook, be sure to choose the right software that supports hardware acceleration or you won’t be able to get the video quality that you are suppose to get.

Most Pine Trail netbooks are not able to play 1080p HD video smoothly out of the box. But this can be done with the help of the CoreAVC codec. It cost $9.95 to purchase the codec, and while it doesn’t work with every media player, you can always go with the Media Player Classic Home Cinema which is free and compatible with the codec. For more details on how to configure the codec, check out PC PRo UK.

Jolicloud will be adding support for 1080p HD video playback on netbooks running on Intel Pine Trail platform. The format supported includes DivX, Xvid, and most other MPEG4-based codecs, except for H.264. It will not require any external processor such as the Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator to play the 1080p HD video.

According to Jolicloud founder, Tariq Krim, the update will be released later this week or early next week. Check out the video below for the demonstration of 1080p HD video playback on Samsung N220 running Jolicloud:
