HP Mini 311 netbook is the first netbook in the market that comes with NVIDIA ION graphics. In our previous review roundup, we conclude that this netbook is definitely worth going after as it adds a larger, high-definition display and advanced graphics to a basic netbook, while still offering long battery life and reasonable price. And we are not the only one who think that.. check out the review of HP Mini 311 from G4TV below. The only thing that they don’t like about this netbook is the touchpad.. but overall this machine is still highly recommended!

The HP Mini 311 is one of the few netbooks that comes with NVIDIA ION graphics, which makes it capable not only for playing high definition movies, but also for playing high-end games. While we have already seen the capability of this machine previously from the review of HP Mini 311, below you will see another gaming test done by Pocket Lint. As expected, the game “Left 4 Dead 2″ run smoothly on this netbook.

Windows 7 Shorten Netbook Battery Life

Yup, that’s right.. Windows 7 does shorten the battery life of netbooks. This has been proven by a few tests done by Laptop Magazine, Liliputing, and jkOntherun respectively.

In Laptop Magazine’s test, they make use of 3 of the most popular netbooks on the market: the Toshiba Mini NB205, Asus Eee PC 1008HA, and HP Mini 311 netbook, and compare the battery life of each netbooks running on Windows XP and Windows 7. The result indicates that on average netbooks get 47 minutes less battery life on Windows 7. Liliputing and jkOnTheRun have run their own tests which invariably reached the same conclusion. Additionally, jkOntherun notes that “using Windows 7 with all of the advanced Aero features off not only makes your netbook look like a Windows 95 beta, it doesn’t help run time in any noticeable way”.

Hopefully, future driver updates and Microsoft’s fine-tuning on Windows 7 will yield longer runtimes on netbook.

HP Mini 311 Overview

Just like many other netbooks out there, the HP Mini 311 comes with Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM, and 160GB HDD. So for daily tasks like web surfing and document processing, it’s expected to perform just as well as many other 10.1-inch netbooks which comes with similar specs.

What’s special about this netbook is the NVIDIA ION graphics.

When it comes to tasks that really take advantage of the NVIDIA GPU like watching HD video and transcoding video (using software with GPU acceleration), the HP Mini 311 outperforms all of the netbooks which come with Intel Integrated graphics.

In terms of design, the Mini 311 has a pleasing swirly pattern in the glossy HP Imprint finish on the lid. It’s available in either black or white colors.

The HP Mini 311 is currently available with a starting price of $399. It’s worth noting that the default color is black, and if you opt for the white color option, there will be extra $20 charge. Also, the current version still comes with Windows XP but will be available with Windows 7 on October 22 with a higher price tag.

Conclusion
HP’s Mini 311 adds a larger, high-definition display and advanced graphics to a basic netbook, while still offering long battery life and reasonable price. It’s definitely one of the best netbook around, especially after Windows 7 is made available on this netbook.

The much awaited HP Mini 311 is now available for order on HP website. With a starting price of $399.99, you get a netbook with 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. It comes with an 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU in the original specs, but you may choose to configure it with the Intel N280 CPU but with additional fee of course.

The HP Mini 311 is the first netbook from HP to use the NVIDIA ION LE platform which bundles a low power Intel Atom processor with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics. The NVIDIA ION graphics enable us to watch HD videos and play 3D games on the HP Mini 311. But that’s not all.. The latest video from notebook.com shows us that with NVIDIA ION graphics, the HP Mini 311 can transcode video up to five times faster than netbooks with integrated graphics. In this demo, it only takes 1 minutes 9 seconds for a video file to move from a Mini 311 onto a Sony Walkman, while for another netbook with integrated Intel graphic, it takes about 10 minutes to complete the task.
