Pine Trail is the code name for Intel’s next generation Atom platform. Pine Trail’s CPU, the single-core Atom N450 “Pineview” processor (confusing, I know), is a more highly integrated version of Atom that puts the memory controller and GPU on the same die as the CPU. As the diagram above shows, this move will shrink the number of chips in the Atom platform from three to just two.
Cindy Ng, Intel Netbook Marketing Team, demonstrates the Intel Atom Processor N450 for netbooks and the Intel Atom Processor D410 and D510 for entry-level desktops in the following video:
What To Expect From Pine Trail Netbooks?
The new processors will consume 20% less power and also feature a lower thermal design. What this means is that a Pine Trail netbook will get longer battery life compared to the previous generation netbook. Also, it will be easier for PC makers to design smaller, thinner, and occasionally fanless netbooks. According to Intel, there will be 80 over netbooks with the new processor showing up at CES 2010, which includes most major PC makers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, and Toshiba.

Here’s an introduction video for the Eee PC 1005PE from CNet:
Review Roundup
As mentioned, other than the Intel Atom N450 processor the rest of the internal components for the Eee PC 1005PE are almost similar to its predecessor, the Eee PC 1005HA. And if you are wondering if the new Intel processor is giving any performance boost to the netbook, the answer is no. From the performance test from most review websites such as Engadget, CNet, Laptop Magazine, etc., the performance of the Eee PC 1005PE is barely different to what we have seen on N270/N280 Atom-powered netbooks. What you will get from the new Intel Pineview processor though, is a much longer battery life. Overall, the Eee PC 1005PE is good for 10 to 12 hours of usage, which is around 25% increase in battery life compared to the Eee PC 1005HA.
In terms of design, the Eee PC 1005PE looks very much like the Eee PC 1005HA. Its glossy lid is covered in a scratch-resistant Infusion finish. The look is sleek, but you’ll have to be willing to put up with fingerprint smudges. What’s different from the Eee PC 1005HA, is the chiclet style keyboard. While the keys may seem smaller than those on the 1005HA which have a more traditional layout, the 1005PE keyboard is found to be easy and comfortable to type on.
So far, customer reviews on the Eee PC 1005PE is pretty good. Check out all the customer reviews here.
There’s also another lower-end model, 1005PE-PU17, which is cheaper at $339.99, but with less battery life.
Conclusion
While there’s not much improvement in terms of performance between the Eee PC 1005PE and its predecessor, the battery life of the new model is significantly longer. This certainly makes the Eee PC 1005PE an even more attractive netbook compared to the 1005HA. At $379.99, we think this netbook is definitely worth considering!
