Not only it has all the great features from the first generation NB205 (ergonomic keyboard, large touchpad, and excellent battery life), it also comes with improved an design (lighter and thinner), and a better speaker which is one of the biggest complain on the NB205.
There are 2 model available: NB305-N310 and NB305-N410. The model that we are recommending in this model is the NB305-N310. Check out one of our previous post, NB305-310 vs NB305-410, for the detailed explanation of the difference between them. If you don’t need a large storage and don’t mind staying with Windows XP, we strongly recommend the the NB305-N310 which is a cheaper model. But if you want a netbook with larger storage and running Windows 7, consider NB305-N410 which cost around $50 more.

In order to provide more choices to consumers, netbook manufacturers will normally release a netbook model in multiple variation. And as consumers, it’s important for us to realize the differences between these variation so that we can pick the one that’s most suitable for us. I have written a post about Asus Eee PC 1005PE vs 1001P before, and in this post I will do the same for Toshiba Mini NB305, the first netbook from Toshiba that comes with Intel Pine Trail platform.
There are 2 variation available for the Toshiba Mini NB305 netbook: NB305-N310, and NB305-N410. Table below shows the comparison between these 2 models. Text in blue are the differences you should pay attention to.

Review Roundup
While the NB205 has everything that we would recommend for a netbook (i.e. ergonomic metal keyboard, large touchpad & touchpad buttons, excellent battery life, unique textured lid that’s anti-smudges, etc..), the two biggest complains on the Toshiba NB205 are the bulky battery that sticks out from the back of the machine, and the weak speaker that hide below the front edge of the system. Not only Toshiba has retained all the good features of NB205 on the NB305, they have also solved those 2 issues on the new model. Instead of jutted out from the rear, the battery is now tucked in underneath, causing the keyboard to be slanting towards the user and giving a more ergornomic angle for typing. Also, the speaker on NB305 is much louder compared to the one in NB205. Another improvement that the NB305 has over the NB205 is weight. Toshiba NB305 is slightly lighter than its predecessor at only 2.6 pounds.
In terms of performance and battery life, there’s not much difference between NB305 with its predecessor. Laptop Magazine manage to get 8:37 hours from their battery test (continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi), while Engadget gets 6:30 hours from their battery drain test (video rundown test with brightness set to 65 percent). In terms of performance, the Toshiba NB305 is similar to other Pine Trail netbooks – good for daily tasks such as web surfing, checking email, document processing, etc.. but not suitable for HD video playback. This is the
The only drawback of the Toshiba NB305 is that it’s more expensive than other Pine Trail netbooks such as the Asus Eee PC 1005PE and Acer Aspire One 532h. However Engadget note that they still prefer the NB305 over the other two because it’s “more comfortable to use”; while Laptop Magazine has once again awarded the NB305 as one of their “Editor’s Choice”.
All of them are currently available for purchase on Amazon at $399.99; while the black version, NB305-N310, is available for $349.99.
Conclusion
The Toshiba NB305 is still one of the best netbook in the market. Although the price is slightly higer than other Pine Trail netbooks, it’s keyboard and especially its touchpad are second to none, and to us that’s worth the premium.
Toshiba Mini NB305 is the updated version of the NB205, one of the most popular netbook in 2009.
The new model Toshiba Mini NB305-N410 comes with a few improvements compared to its predecessor. First, it comes with the new Pine Trail platform and Intel Atom N450 processor which gives it a longer battery life (11 hours according to Toshiba). Second, the NB305 has an improved design where the battery no longer sticks out from the back like the NB205 does. And finally, the NB305 is a slightly lighter at only 2.6 pounds.
This particular model, NB305-N410WH, comes with frost white color. It’s also available in Royal Blue, Java Brown, and Onyx Black. Note however that the Onyx black version comes with slightly different specs and is slightly cheaper than this and other model with different colors.

Here’s a video of Toshiba showing their latest NB305 netbook on CES 2010:
Laptop Magazine has recently published a review of Toshiba NB305, a new model that comes with Intel Pine Trail platform. According to them, the chasis of the NB305 looks better with more curves and thinner at the front. Also, the battery has been moved from the back to the bottom of the netbook. The battery life which last for 8:37 hours is however shorter than the NB205′s battery life which last for 8:51 hours, according to Laptop’s test. Although that’s not too much of difference, but we actually expect the NB305 to run longer hours than the NB205 since it’s built on the Pine Trail platform.
Toshiba’s next generation Pine Trail netbook, the NB305 has made appearance on both Engadget and Laptop Magazine. It looks pretty similar to the NB205, but the battery no longer sticks out from the back of the netbook and is more integrated into the chassis now.
The specs for the Toshiba NB305 includes: 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Windows 7 Starter, and a 6-cell battery that can provide up to 11 hours of battery life. The colored models are priced at $400 while the black model costs $350.
