Asus Eee PC T101MT First Look

The Asus Eee PC T101MT is the new convertible touch-screen netbook that Asus will be releasing soon. It features a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 Pine Trail processor, and a 10-inch screen which supports multitouch gestures and can be fold down over the keyboard for use in tablet mode. Other than these 2 features, the Eee PC T101MT is pretty much similar to the Eee PC T91MT, the company’s existing 9 inch netbook.

While the Eee PC T101MT is not yet released, Asus has published a video showing off some touch screen features built into Windows 7 Home Premium along with a look at ASUS’ custom touchscreen interface. Check out the video below:

HP 5102: A Touch-Enabled Pine Trail Netbooks

Besides the HP Mini 210, the company show off another touch-enabled Pine Trail netbook called the HP Mini 5120 in CES 2010. Some people might not like it, but one “special feature” for this netbook is that it comes with a handle which makes it easier to be carried around. Check it out from the video below:

Flybook v5 With Touch Screen & Windows 7

The Flybook V5 is a pretty unique convertible touch screen machine. It comes with 8.9-inch touch screen display, Intel Core 2 Duo ULV U7600 1.2GHz Processor, 80GB hard drive, supports up to 4GB of RAM, and has a user removable battery that should run between 4 and 5 hours. This is a rather special combination if compared to other convertible touch screen netbook such as the Asus Eee PC T91MT. What’s even more unique about the Flybook V5 is that instead of a touchpad, it has a small pointing stick near the top right corner of the keyboard and a series of buttons you can press above the keyboard to perform some actions.

And as you may have guessed, the price for the Flybook V5 is not cheap at all. You may get a unit of this machine with 2GB RAM on Amazon with 999.97. Sascha from Netbooknews.com has spend some time with the Flybook V5, and have taken a short overview video on it.

Review Roundup

The overall customer rating for the Asus Eee PC T91MT is 3 out of 5. There are customers who are very happy with this machine, but there are also some who complain that the multitouch screen is not responsive to fingers. This is because the touchscreen of the T91MT comes shipped uncalibrated, and the ASUS calibration utility does a poor job of calibration. You will need to use Windows 7 calibration utility which works better, and makes touching much more accurate. You can read all of the customer reviews here.

Summary of good and bad about Asus Eee PC T91MT:

Good

  • Low-priced multitouch tablet
  • It’s very thin and light, measuring just one inch thick and weighing two pounds
  • Solid build quality
  • Great Keyboard – the keys are somewhat stiff and provide an improved typing experience over any previous 7-inch or 8.9-inch model in the Eee lineup
  • Easy access to upgrading the memory
  • Color accuracy at various horizontal and vertical viewing angles improved compared to the T91
  • GMA500 capable of some HD video decoding (with a few tweaks)
  • Great battery life even with 3-cell: 5 hours, 10 minutes with Windows 7 power mode set to Power Saver, and Super Hybrid Engine set to Power Saving Mode (WiFi and Bluetooth enabled, screen brightness at around 40%). Under constant use, you can expect better than 4 hours of battery life

Bad

  • Does not provide access to the SSD or WiFi modules. You will have to completely disassemble the netbook to access those components
  • Poor speaker quality
  • Slightly slower experience with 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor compared to other netbooks that run 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
  • Battery is not removable or consumer upgradable
  • Stylus collapses during use.

Availability
The Asus Eee PC T91MT touchscreen convertible netbook is currently available on Amazon for $532.00 (free shipping).

Conclusion
If you are looking for a low cost tablet without the need for an active digitizer or powerful hardware, the T91MT is certainly worth checking out. But if you need higher speed or performance, you might want to go for other netbooks that run on Intel Atom N270 or faster processor.
